Dungeons: Laika’s a great fire nuker for early-game players in DB10. He does huge amounts of damage against pretty much everything. Newer players can safely use him in tower teams since his passive will protect him from the Dragon’s counter and the DoTs will quickly reduce the tower’s health. Past that, he also works as a standard nuker in end-game speed DB10 teams. However, he isn’t that remarkable at this point, so most players often opt for an ignore-defense monster like Bethony or Kahli in his spot here instead.
Raids: While he still does an insane amount of damage in raids, his passive isn’t as suitable here. While Laika’s counters does help since it won’t factor into the raid boss’ own counter number, he doesn’t bring enough utility to the table here. Pure nukers like Theomars, which has a defense break and great leader skill, or Perna with its team-heal boasts makes them more supportive, and thus better, for raid teams. You can use him in earlier raid teams if you’re lacking options, but there’s little reason to use him here for more established teams.
ToA: Generally speaking, ToA teams heavily rely on turn and attack bar manipulation to succeed. Laika’s passive is ineffective here since enemy monsters won’t get that many turns off, so he’s only used here for newer players who do not have other nuker options. Apart from some raw damage, Laika doesn’t have that much utility in ToA, making him unfavorable compared to other nukers and crowd controllers.
PvP: Laika’s buff awhile back makes him an extremely annoying and versatile threat in PvP Defenses. His Groggo-like passive and annoying counters makes him a good counter to plenty of cleave teams in Arena Offense. In Guild Wars, his usage falls a little, but is still often used nonetheless. Most Laikas in Guild War Defenses are often paired with strong attack buffers and defense breakers like Bastet and Chasun.
A well-runed Laika can virtually solo any non-bruiser offense teams, especially if he’s on Vampire. Some players will even opt for a tank Laika to ensure that no Lushen will be able to cleave the team. Both Violent and Vampire options work well depending on your team compositions, but you can essentially treat him as a Fire-Theomars in your offense teams.
How to Counter
Due to his annoying counters, many players forget that Laika also can’t glance, giving him a 100% crit rate against Water monsters too. While his AI won’t attack randomly like Theomars does, this does mean it’s difficult to bring a Water tank for him, especially if there’s a defense breaker on Laika’s side.
Your best bet is to either bring immunity buffers to make sure he can’t get his annoying stuns off, or bring multi-hitters to quickly take him out. Monsters like Theomars and Shi Hou works great against him, but you need to make sure you can get a defense break off-him first. Alternatively, Tesarion’s Oblivion will work just fine provided he won’t be targeted right off the bat.
- Some accuracy is important for Laika’s stuns to land. Try to get around 60% for PvP usage
- HP and defense is also important on Laika, a pure-damage one can be easily killed by Lushens and other cleave monsters
- Shield monsters like Khmuns’ synergizes extremely well with Laika’s passive
Laika’s a great monster for all players thanks to his pretty unique and annoying passive. He carries early-game players through the PvE content of the game, while late-game players will still use him in PvP Defenses and World Arena. While in the past he’s often seen as a inferior Theomars (before the buffs), he has made a huge impact in the meta and is definitely worth giving your best runes to him.
- Great all-round stats
- 2nd Skill has one of the highest multipliers in the game
- Extremely tanky due to his passive
- Great in PvP Defense
- Average base speed
- While still useful, his Resistance on awakening could have been better off as Crit Rate
