Dungeons: Since the change to HoH, Hwadam isn’t used as much in Cairos Dungeons as he was in the past. However, his utility there can still be taken advantage of by newer players who got him early on in GB10, or even the last couple stages in the new HoH. Hwadam’s passive makes your runs extremely safe since he can protect any ally that’s getting targeted. Pair him up with a strong healer like Chasun and he’ll be enough to ensure a clear. However, his lack of damage makes him useless for anything besides a super safe team.
Raids: While the attack break and glancing is useful, Hwadam’s passive will often be negated by the Oblivion from the boss. While he can survive well on his own, the Oblivion makes the reason you bring him useless, since he won’t be able to protect your squishier allies during the debuff period. While he seems good on paper, he really doesn’t do that much in raids and often times is just taking up the spot of a more useful monster.
ToA: You won’t be using him here for speed teams, but you will use him if you’re a new player or one that’s looking to make an auto-ToAH team. His passive makes it really difficult for your team to die, provided you have a good healer paired with him. This makes him a wonderful monster for players seeking to automate the grueling ToAH stages.
PvP: Hwadam can often be found in both Arena and Guild War teams, where he’ll either be part of full bruiser comps to maximize his passive or paired with nukers like Laika, Theomars and Perna respectively. The Chasun-Hwadam duo is infamous in PvP since Chasun’s Fallen Blossom and Amuse allows strong survivability for Hwadam (and thus, your other nuker too).
The Light Taoist can be used effectively in literally all PvP content. However, he shines the most in Guild Wars Offense, where the ability for you to choose your own battles makes Hwadam completely free of counters here. If you’re looking for the word “safe” in your monster roster, Hwadam is undoubtedly the one you need for that.
How to Counter
In Arena, Hwadam isn’t as much of a threat if you have strong AoE teams. Hwadam isn’t able to protect that many allies if you’re dishing out damage equally to everybody, making him pretty useless if your AoE attacks can kill him or the healers before they get a move off.
Guild War Defense wise, it is crucial to pick a team that either nukes Hwadam out on the first turn, or have strong enough sustain and damage to repeatedly kill the enemy’s damage threats over and over again until they finally die. Tesarion’s Oblivion also works, but Hwadam’s high resistance can cause a wipe if he’s unable to land it before the enemy’s nuker get a turn off. Be warned if you’re doing the first option though, since most well-runed Hwadams will have over 50k HP for you to deal with.
- HP takes priority over everything, followed by resistance and defense
- Hwadam’s usefulness comes from his passive, not his skills, so speed isn’t a priority for him at all
- Will-runes are a near-must for Hwadam if you’re using him in defense
Among the elusive monsters in the Light & Dark Natural 4*s, Hwadam’s definitely one of the most coveted and wanted. The amount of survivability he brings to your teams is insane and can’t be matched by any other monster in the game. Newer players who have him might now see the appeal just yet, but once your rune quality improves, Hwadam’s protection for your monsters will become apparent.
