Site Review

Dungeons:
  • GB10 – (Rating: 6.5/10) Basalt’s heal, defense buff & AoE attack bar reduction is a great kit for newer players. He helps a lot with crowd control and survivability for newer players, but later on you’ll realize that both his heal and damage doesn’t scale well for whatever team you’ll be using here.
  • DB10 – (Rating: 6.5/10) The only reason why you’ll want to use Basalt here is for cc-ing purposes and beefing up your team with his defense buff. However, Megan does a far better job than him for the latter option since she also offers a useful beneficial strip. Newer players will be able to get some use out of him, but he isn’t practical later on.
  • NB10 – Not recommended. His lack of multi-hits and relevant debuffs just makes him weak here. There’s just no reason why you want to use him in NB10.
Scenario:

(Rating 6.5/10) A good starting fodder farmer thanks to his strong AoE damage. His heal won’t be enough to sustain in Faimon Hell unless you have good runes though, so it’s unlikely you’ll be able to make use of him there.

Raids: 
  • R5 – Not recommended. Attack bar reduction users like Hwa and Barque vastly outshines Basalt’s use. The rest of his kit isn’t that great for raids either.
  • Element Rift Beasts – Not recommended. You can use him as a frontline tank for some survivability, but his overall skill set is rather lackluster for beasts. He doesn’t provide enough damage, heals or debuffs to warrant a spot over other monsters.
ToA: 

(Rating 9/10) Basalt is one of the best ToA monsters in the game due to his 3rd Skill’s amazing CC capabilities. With a 3 turn cooldown when maxed and ability to give himself the defense buff to maximize the damage, he’s a reliable monster for both manual and auto teams. On top of that, he offers a pretty rare provoke skill, which is absolutely crucial for a good number of boss stages. Pair him up with Mav and there’s little chance for the ToA Bosses in getting their 2nd or 3rd Skill off. Newer players can benefit from his kit in practically every stage of ToA, while more experienced players can use him in their ToAH auto team. However, Basalt can be a useless monster to build if you are already able to clear ToAH comfortably. Players who already have a good ToAH team will find it difficult to fit him into it, and he’ll just end up being a waste of resources.

PvP:

(Rating: 7/10) Basalt is situationally useful in early PvP Offense teams. He does a decent amount of AoE damage, although it isn’t an amount that will be able to KO most monsters from full health. You can use him as a CC-damage hybrid monster and pair him up with most AoE defense breakers to get the job done. However, his damage and heal will drastically fall off later on, and you’ll be Hell Stomped in finding a use out of him.

How to Counter:

Pretty much every Basalt found in PvP Defenses will die to a single Lushen amp. If not, you can bring ignore-defense monsters like Kahli, Bulldozer and Katarina to get the job done. Due to Basalt’s need to have a good amount of HP & Defenses, it’s difficult to find one that will have spectacular stats in either one of them. Just make sure you don’t get stalled out by his defense buff, and you’ll have a pretty easy time defeating him.

Other advice:
  • Accuracy is crucial for his provoke and attack bar reduction. You need at least 45% accuracy to function in ToA
  • While his 1st Skill scales off attack, you should never build him as an attack-type monster
Editor’s Note:

Despite all the praises newer players have for Basalt, I personally find the Dark Mammoth to be a hit or miss monster. There’s virtually no use for him if you are already able to clear ToAH, and you will never invest your top quality runes on this monster. Let’s just face it, there’s just much better alternatives that you can give your Violent DEF% runes to. He’s a great monster for newer players climbing up ToA and most early game content, but he isn’t something you will continue using late game. I won’t deny his usefulness in ToAH auto teams though, so if you want to make your life easier for ToAH and you have nothing else to build, he’s still a keeper.
