Dungeons: Korona’s 3rd Skill can actually cause some issues. His 3rd Skill removes all buffs and debuffs, including any armor breaks or attack debuff on the enemy in return for his sleep. This makes him a hindrance in places like the boss stage, where none of the monsters will get the sleep debuff, but the debuffs will still be removed! Sure, he can function as an immunity stripper too, but it’s far more likely for him to take out more useful debuffs like defense breaks. Better yet, monsters like Megan & Belladeon are still more reliable over him.
Raids: All the other Brownie Magicians are already poor choices for raids due to the 1st Skill, but Korona takes it to a whole new level. Remember how Brandia used to remove two debuffs on the enemy in exchange for damage, and how annoying it was there? Take it a step further, and Korona removes ALL the debuffs while doing nothing much in return. You’re literally just trolling your raid party members if you use him here.
ToA: There’s some usage for Korona here due to the huge number of debuffs you’ll give against the enemy. You could potentially chain multiple DoTs from your Barettas and Grim Reapers, and convert that into a 3 or 4-turn sleep, allowing you to focus down the enemy one by one. However, single-target attacks often doesn’t have the same amount of utility as other AoE Skills in ToA. Any form of DoTs that you apply after that, like from Thrain or Hemos’ 2nd Skill will wake them up regardless (yes, DoT damage does wake monsters up). You’ll take a lot more time through this method than a standard AoE attack bar manipulation and stuns. While it does seem practical in use, in reality, it just doesn’t work out for anyone except very new players.
PvP: Thanks to the change on his 3rd Skill, Korona does seem to become a lot better since he can now strip actual buffs! That’s all fine and dandy, until you realize that it’s only a 50% chance. Reliability is something very important in PvP, especially for a stripper. While there’s no denying that replacing buffs with sleep is far better than just outright stripping them, a low 50% chance isn’t something you can rely on for any full-fledged cleave teams. Heck, his Wind brother Aquila will still do a better job over him because of this factor, and they both offer the exact same buff on their 2nd Skill. Newer players can get a kick out of the gimmick of seeing absurd sleep turns, but he isn’t really practical in the long run.
He has some uses as a surprise pick in World Arena against buff heavy teams though, since some players would not want to risk him shutting them down on a sleep duration longer than even Hathor. Just make sure that the rest of your team will be able to support it in the event his sleep does pull through.
How to Counter
I don’t think I’ve come acrossed a single Korona in PvP Defense…ever. He’s already a hard to control monster in Manual, so he can be a very detrimental monster for a PvP Defense team that isn’t build solely around him. If you’re really worried about the 50% success rate, and you’re sure that the enemy team won’t accidentally wake you up over it, you can always just not bring heavy buffers (maybe apart from immunity). I wouldn’t worry too much about countering him, but just make sure his 2nd Skill’s buffs won’t help major nukers on the enemy team kill you by removing the buffs and you’re good.
- Since his 3rd Skill scales off HP, you should stack that stat more than anything
- Speed-tuning is extremely crucial for Korona to make sure he won’t be a detriment to your team. Make sure he’s slower than your debuffer, but faster than your armor breakers and nukers
Even after the change to his 3rd Skill, I can’t really see anybody using Korona in the long run. The only reason why people want to use him is just to enjoy that “Woah the enemy has a _ turn sleep!” gimmick that isn’t as practical as it sounds. Sleep in general isn’t that great of a debuff since a single hit will wake them up, regardless of how many turns they were on. Add in the fact that Korona’s 3rd Skill only has a 50% chance of proccing it, and it just isn’t really reliable. You can build him on a Violent or Despair set to take advantage of it, but I still wouldn’t count Korona as a key monster for anybody. Pretty much any AoE stripper will do better. He’ll still requires another buff or two to be viable in PvP.
