Site Review

Dungeons: Since there isn’t any shields anywhere (apart from the Hall of Wind), his unique 3rd Skill doesn’t stand out here. While Karl functions as a typical dark nuker for any Cairos Dungeons, he has absolutely nothing that makes him stand out against virtually every other nuker out there. The only place you can see yourself using him is in the Hall of Winds where his 3rd Skill will go through the invincibility of the B10 boss. Apart from that though, he literally offers nothing noteworthy to make him worthwhile here.

    Raids: Karl’s one of the few monsters in the game with absolutely zero debuffs. All of his skills are purely damage-based, while giving buffs only to himself. Also, compared to monsters like Ardella and Xiao Lin, his damage pales in comparison to theirs. You want to use Karl mainly for his ignore damage-reduction 3rd Skill, and there just isn’t a place for him here.

    ToA: Again, the lack of debuffs or AoE skills makes him a questionable choice here. While you can run him against specific Chloe, Rina or Fuco comps to cut down the time, these situations are few and far between. In most cases, you’re better off just using the same ToAN or ToAH team you’ve been using for these stages.

    PvP: One of the things that stands out the most for Karl is his damage reduction capabilities. Like the Samurai’s Sword of the Supreme Sky Wolf, this skill will go through ALL shields, including annoying Rina / Khmun’s shields as well as Chloe’s Fanatic buff. You can thus run him against such comps, where his 3rd Skill should be able to one-shot a good chunk of monsters if you can get a attack buff and defense break on the target.

    Another noteworthy use of him is as a reliable Katarina counter, where he becomes more reliable than buff strippers in taking care off Katarina before she gets a turn off. Beyond that, Karl functions as a dark nuker that’s almost always going to be targeted first by monsters like Belladeon.

    How to Counter

    PvP Defense Karls are rare, but pretty easy to counter. While you have to be careful of the damage-reduction 3rd Skill, he really needs both attack buff and defense break to do good damage, largely due to his poor base attack (for a nuker anyway). He’s also a really squishy monster, so one strong nuke should finish him off fairly easily. If you need a monster to tank a hit, Groggo’s a excellent counter, especially since his passive will still work against Karl’s 3rd Skill.

    Other advice:

    • You don’t really need that much crit rate on Karl. Either stack as much crit damage as you can or get to a benchmark of 70% if want him to be reliable on his other skills too
    • Speed is important on him if you wish to use him as a Katarina counter. Aim for around 160 speed in total and you should be able to outspeed virtually all Katarinas in Conqueror 1 and below

    Editor’s Note

    Like Cassie, the Dark Cow Girl, Karl’s 3rd Skill does seem like a fun and unique toy to play with. However, he frankly just isn’t worth the effort in building for any players past mid-game. The lack of debuffs, good protection and poor base stats makes him lose out as you get more options the more you progress through the game. He’s at best a side project you can build in your free time, but he’ll never be part of your core team for long.

    A potentially fun side-project, he’s a good nuker for early-game players, but falls off heavily after you get monsters like Theomars.
