Site Review

Dungeons: Katarina has very little utility on any of the Dungeons, mainly because of the difficulty in controlling the damage on her 3rd Skill. While her 3rd Skill still does a decent amount of damage without invincibility, it only truly shines when she has the buff. The only viable place she has is in GB10, and you’re pretty much forced to pair her with a Chloe or Qebehsenuef to be effective. Her 2nd Skill, while providing the invincibility buff on kill, typically takes too long before her 3rd Skill is in use. Most of the time, you’ll move on to the next stage before that happens. There’s also a very high chance of her AI derping and using her 3rd Skill before anything else. In auto runs, the difficulty of coordinating the buff and 3rd Skill together just makes her an unpractical monster here.

Raids: The infamous triple Katarina R5 team has already been circulating the internet for awhile, easily hitting a minute or less in most runs and once hitting an astonishing 12 second run. However, it’s very important to take note that the rune quality on those monsters are absurd, with the players in that run hailing from arguably the best guild in Asia. Most players won’t be able to make use of Katarina as effectively as them. Katarina can still be a viable choice in raids, but only if you have the necessary rune quality to support that. If not, your team can easily wipe and be a hindrance to the other players.

ToA: Katarina’s effectiveness here is pretty much the same as in Dungeons. However, she can be a bit more viable against boss stages, since newer players will likely be using her on manual instead. You can choose to run her in stages where you need a good amount of burst damage. Again, there’s little use for her beyond that.

PvP: Katarina’s definitely much more usable in PvP Offense, where her three-hit ignore defense on her 3rd Skill does an insane amount of damage, easily killing off all but the tankiest of monsters. However, Katarina is very difficult to use due to the conditions and randomness of her 3rd Skill. You’re pretty much forced to run her with an invincibility mob and an attack buffer to maximize her damage, and if you’re unlucky, all of her attacks will only target a single monster, which can easily cost you the round.

As such, she shines much better in Guild Wars, where the number of potential enemies are cut from 4 to 3. However, this also means that if your invincibility teammate like Chloe, Qebehsenuef or Pontos is dead, you pretty much can’t use her in the next sword. If you’re lucky enough to have Jamire, a Jamire-Katarina-Chloe or Qebehsenuef comp is an extremely viable and competent team, even in end-game, since you get a second round of some crazy ignore-defense damage. Another viable team is a Galleon-Katarina-Bernard team, where you rely on Katarina’s 2nd Skill to get her invincibility buff. While this can be viable uptil mid-game, the potential presence of Will runes makes it difficult to run this team later on.

How to Counter

Despite the conditions needed to be met, Katarina can sometimes still be found in PvP Defenses, especially in mid-game or earlier. At this stage, she’ll very likely be paired with a Chloe mainly because of how much more sustain and protection she has over Qebehsenuef. Your best bet against a Katarina comp is to either outspeed and quickly kill off Katarina, or to bring a buff remover like Belladeon or Megan. As long as you can get her to use her 3rd Skill without the invincibility buff, there shouldn’t be any difficulties beating a Katarina defense.

Other advice:

  • Since most players will likely pair her with Qebehsenuef, you’ll only need 70% crit rate in total. If you’re using him in place of Chloe though, Will runes on Katarina is pretty important
  • Like other nukers, once you get your desired amount of crit rate, you should prioritize crit damage, attack and speed. Katarina’s decent enough supportive stats allows her to take a hit even if you only have some HP and defense substats

Editor’s Note

Katarina’s definitely a very interesting monster to play with. Her ignore defense on her 3rd Skill hits hard, especially since once you can meet the conditions, there’s a 100% chance to ignore-defense on her skill, pretty much making it the strongest ignore-defense skill in the game! She’s also arguably the only PvP-focused fusion monster, so there’s little reason for newer players to build her when you’re still focusing on clearing your Scenarios and Dungeons. Past mid-game content though, most players avoid using her due to her unpredictability, unless they just so happen to have Jamire as well.

Summary

A PvP-heavy monster from Fusion! Worth building only if you have a Chloe or Qebehsenuef for early-game, and only if you have Jamire for end-game content.

Pros

– One of the most powerful ignore defense monsters in the game
– Good multipliers across all skills
– Speed on awakening gives her 116 base speed in total
– Good base HP makes her pretty tanky for a nuker

Cons

– 3rd Skill is completely random and has an annoying condition
– Heavily reliant on a good invincibility buffing teammate
– Base attack is only 801
