Dungeons: There isn’t really a use for Orion in PvE settings. Almost anything Orion can do, speed boosters like Bernard can do better. While Orion can be used as a stripper in DB10, Megan and Belladeon are much more viable alternatives for this aspect.
Raids: Orion can actually cause more harm than good if you choose to use him in raids. With a high chance to violent proc due to it being in-build his first skill, he can increase the number of revenge procs from the dragons. You should not use him in raids at all, period.
ToA: Like dungeons, there isn’t really a reason to use Orion in ToA. Attack bar boosters like Bernard and Verdehile are far superior options, with either having greater attack bar boosts or more reliable debuffs.
PvP: Orion excels in PvP defenses as his presence acts as an unpredictable threat to any team. For Arena defenses, you should run Orion on a swift build, making him as fast as possible to ensure he gets the first turn off. As for Guild War defenses, you can choose to run him in a myriad of ways. Swift, Violent and Despair works wonderfully here, although the last option is much less common.
However, many players fall into the trap of placing Orion with the wrong teammates. Generally, Orion is best utilized when paired with powerful nukers like Theomars, Seara, Rakan and Perna or tanky bruisers like the Beast Monk family. With a successful strip, defense break and or stun, Orion can help set-up the perfect scenario for a teammate to eliminate one of the enemy monsters and win the game.
That being said, besides Real-Time Arena, Orion is a poor pick for offense teams. His greatest weapon, his unpredictability, also makes him an unreliable stripper and debuffer when used in your offense. If you’re in need of an attack bar booster, the ever-popular Bernard is a much better choice.
How to Counter
There are typically two ways to deal with an Orion defense, outspeeding him or using brute force and hope for the best. The first option, may be rather hard to manage if you’re a newer player. Depending on the enemy team, you can pair your own attack bar booster with a speed leader and just pray that your team can get the move off first. As for the second option, shield runes can just as well prevent Orion from removing a crucial Will rune from one of your monsters.
Regardless, the reason why Orion is so popular in defenses is because there is never a 100% way to deal with him, especially if he is paired with the right monsters. Your best bet is to either tank it out or outspeed and try to eliminate the enemy’s threats as quickly as possible. If Orion successfully gets his “Harmless” Prank off, well it just isn’t your day then.
- Accuracy is very important for Orion’s 3rd Skill to land. If you’re lacking accuracy, it’s definitely worth swapping out your slot 6 rune to replace it with an accuracy one.
- As Orion is generally used in defense, a decent amount of bulk is important for Orion too. Once you get a satisfactory amount of speed, you should begin trying to get as much HP and defense as you can.
If there’s one word to describe Orion, it’s unpredictability. As I’ve mentioned, Orion is an incredibly hard monster to deal with in defense, especially if the enemy has superior rune quality compared to you. If you’re a new player, however, you shouldn’t focus on building him. Orion is definitely a more mid to end-game monster for your defense. If you do happen to get him early on, just put him in storage and place your best speed runes on Bernard or Chloe first.
